Causes of Common Kitchen Fires

11/20/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Causes of Common Kitchen Fires Fire and Smoke damage can be a difficult event to go through. Put your trust in SERVPRO of Lakelands team, to get you back in your home.

The kitchen is the source of many fire hazards because it's where heat, electricity, water and grease come together. The most common type of fire is the grease fire. A grease fire is extremely dangerous as it can get out of control quickly and spread from the stove throughout the kitchen and into other rooms of the house. Thanksgiving day alone counts for nearly 2,500 house fires across America.

Common Causes of Kitchen Fires

Too high temperature in the fryer

Vegetable, more flammable, oils

Old, more flammable oil, in the deep fryer

Fat deposits in the flue and ventilation ducts

Misalignment sprinklers due to equipment moved around

Clogged melting links of the sprinklers leading to impaired function

Other types of kitchen fires include oven fire or the microwave. When a fire starts, keep the door closed and turn off the oven. The lack of oxygen will suffocate the flames. If continues to smoke like a fire use a fire extinguisher or call fire department.

At SERVPRO of Lakeland we are available 24 hours and 7 days a week. Give us a call at 863-646-4213. We can help make any fire damage you are facing and make it, "Like it never even happened.”

Microscopic Mold

11/16/2018 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Microscopic Mold Mold is not fun to have growing in your house, always have you air conditioner annually checked to ensure humidity in the home stays low.

Microscopic mold spores naturally occur almost everywhere, both outdoors and indoors. This makes it impossible to remove all mold from a home or business. Therefore, mold remediation reduces the mold spore count back to its natural or baseline level. Some restoration businesses advertise “mold removal” and even guarantee to remove all mold, which is inaccurate. Consider the following mold facts:

Mold is present almost everywhere, indoors and outdoors.

Mold spores are microscopic and float along in the air and may enter your home through windows, doors, or AC/heating systems or even hitch a ride indoors on your clothing or a pet.

Mold spores thrive on moisture. Mold spores can quickly grow into colonies when exposed to water. These colonies may produce allergens and irritants.

Before mold remediation can begin, any sources of water or moisture must be addressed. Otherwise, the mold can and most likely will return.

Mold often produces a strong, musty odor and can lead you to possible mold problem areas.

Even higher-than-normal indoor humidity can support mold growth. Keep indoor humidity below 45 percent.

If your home or business has a mold problem, we can inspect and assess your property and use our specialized training, equipment, and expertise to remediate your mold infestation. You can call SERVPRO of Lakeland to take care of you!

Leave Fire Damage To The Pros

Fire Damage Leave Fire Damage To The Pros Most fires start in the kitchen. Call us today SERVPRO of Lakeland is always prepared.

The Facts About Cleaning Smoke Damage After a House Fire

Many homeowners think that they can clean-up smoke damage to their home after it has been burned in a fire. Unfortunately, that is never a good idea. Cleaning up smoke and soot damage requires professionals to do the job.

Bring in the Fire Damage Pros

First off, a house that has been burned in a fire is typically not safe to enter or spend time in. The integrity of walls and floors may have been damaged, along with other hazards. It’s important not to enter the home until professionals tell you it is safe to do so.

While you should not undertake trying to clean up smoke and soot damage from a house fire yourself, you should get the professionals into your as soon as possible. Ash and smoke, if left untreated, will cause corrosion, discoloration and a lingering powerful and offensive odor. Ash, specifically, will start causing damage and discoloration almost immediately and the damage may be permanent and irreversible. Anything that was made of plastic will begin discoloring within minutes. Metals will easily tarnish and corrode and fiberglass will begin to yellow.

If you get fire damage restoration professionals in soon enough after a house fire, they can mitigate or eliminate the smoke and ash damage from the fire and prevent further damage to your property. Unfortunately, if you don’t get the pros in early, the damage becomes worse and worse and the costs to repair will begin to skyrocket within just a few weeks!

Know Who to Hire

Many companies claim to be fire damage restoration specialists, but they may not actually have the proper training and certification to do the job. The Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) is the primary oversight agency for the industry. Companies recognized, registered and certified by the IICRC will have taken extensive coursework to earn their certification.

What a Trained and Certified Fire Damage Restoration Professional Does

A trained and certified fire damage restoration professional will first identify all affected materials and the source of odors, if possible. They will be extremely thorough. They will identify what can be salvaged and cleaned and what cannot be and must be completely replaced. They will then begin the clean-up process by removing built-up ash residue. Once the ash is cleaned, they can better identify the sources of odors, which they will treat with special detergents made to neutralize the odors. Once fire damaged materials are treated, they will be sealed to prevent future odors from emitting into your home.

How to Help Prevent Water Damage to Your Lakeland Home.

11/2/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage How to Help Prevent Water Damage to Your Lakeland Home. If you experience with water damage call the Pros at SERVPRO of Lakeland 863-646-4213

Preventing water damage will save you many headaches and is easier than dealing with the cleanup and repairs. We do not like to think about it, but water damage can cause severe damage to your property. It weakens the foundation and the very core that holds your property together.

You have heard about core strength in your body. Well, water damage hits at the core strength of your house, eventually causing severe structural damage. Damp wood invites termites and carpenter ants; plus, it causes mold and mildew.

Here are 3 easy prevention tips

These tips are easy things to do that will give you piece of mind the next time heavy storms hit.

Ensure Good Drainage

Poor drainage weakens your foundation, causing cracks, uneven settling, and pathways for water to enter your home.

Clean your gutters routinely. A clogged gutter and drains will send cascades of water down the side of your house, damaging your siding and foundation.

Ensure your downspouts direct water 5 to 10 feet away from your house.

Make sure your yard is sloped at least 6 inches over a 10-foot span away from your foundation.

Check for Water Leaks

Persistent leaks lead to mold, mildew, rot, and even termites and carpenter ants (they like chewing wet wood, since it is soft).

Check for dark spots under pipes inside sink cabinets, stains on ceilings, toilets that rock, and of course drips.

At least once a year, inspect your roof. Repair any missing, loose, and or damaged shingles.

Repair any cracked caulking and check for leaks around flashing.

Know what to do should water damage occur

Water damage is all about action. Acting fast will save you time and unnecessary costs. Contact SERVPRO of Lakeland experts immediately, our team will help to restore rather than replace. What you can do until SERVPRO of Lakeland arrives

Remove art objects to a safe, dry place & gather loose items from floors.

Remove colored rugs and upholstery from wet carpeting to prevent stains.

Do not turn on ceiling fixtures if the ceiling is wet, and keep out of rooms where ceilings are sagging.

Public Enemy #1 - Refrigerators

10/26/2018 (Permalink)

Water Damage Public Enemy #1 - Refrigerators Call us Today 863-646-4213

This month one of our customers is dealing with one of our top 5 worst offenders when it comes to causes of water damage.  Most refrigerators come with plastic water supply lines that hook up to the wall.  We highly encourage everyone to replace this line with a copper one that can be purchased at any hardware store such as Home Depot or Lowe's.

Often there is no warning that damage is happening until the flooring begins buckling or walls become soft.  Luckily, in this case we were able to catch the damage early.  It was necessary to remove the floating laminate floor drill holes in the cabinet toe-kicks to allow for air circulation under the cabinets. But, the homeowner isn't always so lucky to catching early. We have done jobs where the fridge leaks for a long time, saturates the drywall and the walls begin to mold behind cabinets.

After, we are finished with the drying we apply an anti-microbial agent to discourage mold growth.

How to Overcome a Fire Damage.

9/7/2018 (Permalink)

Fire Damage How to Overcome a Fire Damage. Fire and Smoke damage can be devastating. Call us today 863-646-4213

A home fire can have devastating physical and mental repercussions. Instead of feeling helpless and wondering where to turn next, use this guide to help you recover and return to normal as soon as possible.

If you have experienced a home fire in Lakeland, and Plant City area and are in need of fire damage restoration services, call SERVPRO at 863-646-4213.

SERVPRO’s Guide for What to Do After a Home Fire

Contact your insurance company right away

Ask your agent about immediate needs for your home, such as removing water caused by the fire department and covering exposed windows and doors. Then, ask about your coverage. Your agent will likely recommend you make a list of everything that was lost or damaged in the fire, including detailed descriptions of each item and what you paid for them.

If you don’t have insurance, your family and the community may help you get back on your feet. Seek help from the Salvation Army, religious organizations, and/or other community groups.

Take care of your family and pets

Be willing to ask for help; you don’t need to go through this recovery process alone. Contact a local disaster relief service to find a place to stay and necessities such as food, clothing, and medicine. Consider leaving your pet with a friend, family member, or veterinarian until things settle down.

Be careful when you return home

Do not enter your damaged home or apartment unless you check with the fire department first and they say it’s safe to do so. When you enter, tread carefully since the fire could have damaged the roof and floor to the point that they might collapse. Ask the fire department if the utilities (gas, electricity, and water) are safe to use. If not, don’t attempt to turn these back on yourself.

Look into replacing important records

Valuable documents (driver’s licenses, passports, social security cards, birth certificates, wills, warranties, etc.) may have been lost in the fire. It’s possible to restore these documents. You can even replace items such as burned paper money, melted coins, and mutilated US Savings bonds.

Seek professional cleaning and restoration services

Homes with relatively small fires can be cleaned and restored to their original condition. Professional fire damage restoration services cover the full scope of cleaning, restoring, and repairing your home, including fire, smoke, and water damage. Experienced professionals at SERVPRO of Lakeland know what cleaning techniques work best for different types of fires and different damaged materials. Even seemingly unaffected areas can be damaged by smoke, which is another reason to leave cleanup in the hands of seasoned professionals.

The road to recovery may be rocky, but with support from your family, friends, and community, and a reliable cleaning and restoration service at your side, you can return to normal sooner than you think. Call SERVPRO of Lakeland to begin the cleanup process today.

Protect Your Property from Flood Damage

8/31/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Protect Your Property from Flood Damage Flooding that happened to a mobile home community during Hurricane Irma.

Because of our location as a gulf state, Polk County, and Hillsborough county residents are especially prone to damage caused by floods. Flooding can be common during the hurricane season but unusual weather patterns can also bring unexpected flooding of the type we have witnessed in our state over the last few years.

If your home has flooded, it is important to conduct a list of safety checks before returning inside.

This includes:

-Checking the roof for dips across the surface

-Checking external walls to determine if they are no longer plum

-Checking the foundation from the outside to see if it has been damaged

-Making sure electricity and gas have been shut off

Once inside, there can be multiple safety hazards and threats. The presence of mold is a real possibility and a valid concern for your personal safety. If you have an older home, there is also the risk of lead or asbestos contamination. Flood water contains multiple health hazards and just because the visible water is gone, it doesn’t mean the contaminants are no longer a threat.

That burning desire to check your home after major water damage is natural but even a few minutes inside could be bad for your health. At SERVPRO of Lakeland, we provide emergency water disaster services for Lakeland, Plant City, Valrico, Brandon, and surrounding areas. We have given our mitigation specialists extensive training for safely entering this type of dangerous environment and for getting the remediation process started. SERVPRO First Responder Bowl

8/21/2018 (Permalink)

Why SERVPRO SERVPRO First Responder Bowl SERVPRO of Lakeland is excited at the opportunity to be apart of honoring our first responders.

In a joint effort to honor the service and sacrifice of America’s First Responders, the annual college football game played at Cotton Bowl Stadium in Dallas, Texas has been renamed the SERVPRO® First Responder Bowl! Kickoff for the newly christened SERVPRO® First Responder Bowl is set for December 26, 2018 at 12:30 p.m. CST (1:30 p.m. EST) and will be televised by ESPN.
The 2018 SERVPRO® First Responder Bowl is the ninth edition of the bowl game, formerly known as the Heart of Dallas Bowl, and part of the 89-year history of games being played at Cotton Bowl Stadium. First responders to be honored include police officers, firefighters, EMS workers, correctional officers, search and rescue, dispatchers, security guards, federal agents, border patrol agents and military personnel who have specialized training and are the first to arrive and provide assistance at the scene of an emergency.
This bowl game opportunity evolved from the shift in our strategic charitable alignment which happened last year during Hurricane Harvey. For the past several years, the SERVPRO® Brand has been aligned with the American Red Cross (ARC) in which collectively, we have contributed over $1.5 million to. Our efforts helped the ARC support disaster victims in a variety of ways. During Hurricane Harvey, there was a natural tendency to want to get more involved in helping others beyond what our services provide and beyond just donating dollars. Out of this, an idea was born in the form of a campaign designed around helping First Responders who stand ready to help at any cost providing a safe society for us all. This developed into an opportunity to give back to those who protect us on a daily basis, and more specifically, to honor their hard work and dedication. Our original efforts around supporting First Responders came in the form of tents at PGA TOUR tournaments where SERVPRO® and other national Brands provided free admission and a day of relaxation in a hospitality tent for any First Responder who wanted to attend. This past May, ESPN contacted us with a special opportunity to be the title sponsor of the First Responder Bowl. This is an awesome platform for SERVPRO® to align with this group and support a great cause. Tickets to the SERVPRO® First Responder Bowl will go on sale September 15th. For more information, check out the official website www.firstresponderbowl.com.

Carpet cleaning the SERVPRO of Lakeland way.

8/3/2018 (Permalink)

Cleaning Carpet cleaning the SERVPRO of Lakeland way. When others said "It couldn't be cleaned", SERVPRO of Lakeland showed up and said "yes it can".

At SERVPRO of Lakeland we like to use Hot Water Extraction (HWE) as a method of carpet cleaning. It involves a combination of hot water and cleaning agents being injected into the fibers of the carpet at high pressure and all lifted soil being removed by a powerful vacuum.

Process:

Though commonly called "steam cleaning", no actual steam is involved in the HWE cleaning process apart from steam that may escape accidentally from the hot water. When the cleaning solution comes in contact with the carpet, it is 125 to 300 degrees Fahrenheit, depending on the heat available from the cleaning unit. In a modern truck-mounted carpet cleaning machine, water can be heated under pressure to over 300 degrees Fahrenheit, but after passing through high-pressure steel braided hose and several manifolds, the water loses much of its heat.

At SERVPRO of Lakeland we like to begin with preconditioner using a pre-spray cleaner that is applied to the soiled surface, followed by light agitation with a grooming brush if the staining is heavy. Next, the surface is passed over several times with a cleaning wand to thoroughly rinse out the preconditioner, as well as use the powerful vacuum to extract as much water as possible. In the next stage, the carpet is dried using a fan or carpet dryer if necessary.

Hot Water Extraction Machines:

We also are equipped with portable machines, which use electricity to heat the water and power the water pump and vacuum motors. Our truck-mounted machines are powered by the van engine. Portable machines are able to access challenging to reach buildings and higher floors, while truck-mounted machines are more powerful and can clean and dry faster. Consumer-grade rental machines use similar technology to professional systems, but with a lot less power and usually without an element to heat water.

Helping Property Managers: Plan For The Storm

7/27/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Helping Property Managers: Plan For The Storm Debris left by the road of flooded homes caused by Storm damage.

The 2018 Atlantic hurricane season is an ongoing event in the yearly formation of tropical cyclones in the Northern Hemisphere. While hurricane season officially began in June, its peak period spans over the months of late July, August and September.

This is especially important for property managers, who work to coordinate storm preparation measures for the protection of their properties. For instance, property managers who oversee multi-story high-rise condominiums need to prepare for challenges involving water intrusion. These obstacles become more complex when those buildings are on the coast or in a flood zone.

Furthermore, property managers have to deal with the fact that some building owners do not live in their units year-round and may not have any measures in place for an approaching storm as it relates to that owner’s individual personal property, such as planters, balcony furniture, interior artwork, curtains, rugs, electronics, etc.

Given issues property managers may come against in a storm situation, a process should be in place well before a storm is ever on the radar to ensure everyone is prepared. If property managers already have procedures in place, it’s not a bad idea for SERVPRO of Lakeland to review those plans with them and consider if they should be updated or supplemented.

Here are some points of interest we like to discuss when assisting property manager plan for a storm:

1)Protection of Common Areas.

-What steps will be taken to prepare and protect the common areas of a property, such as boarding up windows, obtaining sandbags, trimming trees, moving furniture, storing items or equipment, and securing records or any other valuable property?

2)Instructions to Owners and Residents.

-Does the property management company have a notice letter ready to be sent to residents in advance of a storm with instructions for preparing their units, such as directions to close shutters, remove all items from balconies, and set or shut-off any appliances in case of a power outage?

3)Emergency Contact and Access.

-Does the property manager have contact information for all owners and residents, as well as keys to all units in case emergency access is needed (in particular, in the event of flooding and water intrusion)? -Would it be feasible for the property manager to attempt to create a list of those residents who will remain on the property versus those who plan to evacuate before the storm?

4)Insurance.

-Does the property have all the required insurance policies, and are they up-to-date and effective?

-Is there a procedure in place for management to document and back-up all records, photos, videos, etc. showing the state of items prior to a storm so that information can be later used in connection with potential claims?

5)On-site Staff.

-How many staff members (management, security, maintenance, etc.) will remain on-site if and when a storm hits? Where will they go on the premise during the storm, and will they have access to any emergency supplies? If no management personnel will be on-site during a storm, who will be designated to return first after the storm to access the damage?

6)Generator.

-Does the property have one? Has it been checked recently to ensure it has sufficient fuel?

7)Evacuation Plan.

-Is there an evacuation plan in place? If so, who is in charge of making sure every resident has left and the property has been secured?

A property’s preparedness plan should be as detailed and as easy to read as possible. SERVPRO of Lakeland can help you prepare today, rather than waiting until a severe storm is on the horizon!

A Disaster Plan for your Pets

7/20/2018 (Permalink)

Storm Damage A Disaster Plan for your Pets Creating a disaster plan is essential to keeping your family members of all species safe!

Most people know they should have a disaster plan in place for their families, but if you are faced with a natural disaster, do you have a disaster plan for your pet? Storms, wildfires and floods happen around the world every day and affect thousands of people and their pets. That’s why everyone should have a plan, not only for yourself, but for your Fur Family. To help you plan for the unimaginable, here are our 9 essentials of disaster prepping for your pet:

  1. Proper ID. The most important thing you can do for your pet before a disaster occurs is to make sure they have proper ID. This means having a physical tag containing your current info on their collar which they wear at all times, and having them micro-chipped and registered in a national registry such as the free Found Animals Microchip Registry.
  2. Keep your pet’s vaccinations up to date to reduce their risk of disease and sickness. There are so many unknowns in a disaster. If you are evacuated, your pet may not be able to come with you to shelter and may be held in boarding with other animals whose health status is unknown. If your home is destroyed, your pet may be lost and living outside for a time and subjected to the elements, dirty water supply or worse. Be safe, not sorry, and vaccinate.
  3. Display a Pet Rescue Sticker. Make sure you have a pet rescue window decal in a place visible to rescue workers.
  4. Identify Pet-Friendly Emergency Shelters. Not all emergency shelters or hotels allow pets. Before a disaster hits, call your local emergency management office or animal shelter to see if there are places planned for people and pets to stay together in the event of an emergency. Research pet-friendly hotels away from typical disaster zones, or arrange to stay with family or friends outside of your area. Prepare a few options in a range of distances from your home in case of either local or region-wide emergencies.
  5. Assemble a Pet Emergency Kit. You can buy a compact kit that fits under your seat, a larger bag you can carry on your shoulder, a grab and go bucket with everything your pet could need and add pet-related items to your family’s existing emergency supplies. Your kit should include the following items:
  • Food and Water

Plan to have at least five days of food, water and portable bowls. Dry food should be in resealable plastic bags. If your pet eats wet food, make sure to buy easy open cans so you don’t need a can opener. Prepare a written feeding schedule.

  • Medication and Medical Records

Keep an extra supply of your pet’s regular medication in a waterproof zip lock bag. Also include a copy of your pet’s vaccination record and microchip number.

  • Supplies

For cats, include kitty litter and disposable litter boxes. For dogs, pack plastic waste bags and an extra leash and harness. Beds, blankets, toys and clothing are also useful to keep your pet calm and cozy in an emergency situation.

  1. Store Supplies for a Speedy Exit. Place all of your emergency supplies in a safe, dry, convenient place near your escape route in case you need to leave in a hurry. The safest way to transport a pet in an emergency or disaster is in a carrier or crate, so keep one close to your emergency kit. Frightened pets can be difficult to manage with only a leash and collar.
  2. When a Disaster Strikes, Don’t Hesitate; Evacuate. Not all disasters come with warning, but if they do, follow emergency response recommendations and evacuate as quickly as possible. Disasters are very stressful on both pets and people, and no one can predict how bad things will get. Don’t wait until the last minute to leave. Use your emergency plan as a tool to supplement first responder instructions.
  3. Leave with Your Pets. If the area is not safe for you, it’s not safe for your pets.  It may not be possible to return for your pets, so take them with you from the start.
  4. If Your Pet Gets Lost, Check for Found Pet Alerts. If your pets are separated from you, check your cell phone and email for Found Pet Alerts. When a rescue worker finds your lost pet and starts an alert in the Found Animals Registry, you will be contacted via phone calls, text messages, and emails based on your pet’s microchip registrations. These alerts will provide information on your pet’s location. If you cannot access your phone or email, or are unable to retrieve your pets, your emergency contacts and vet will also be notified.

Breaking the Mold

4/20/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Breaking the Mold This mold is obvious and visible. It's the mold that isn't so visible that can be the most harmful.

Are You Being Exposed to Mold?

Mold is one of the most dangerous materials we deal with. The danger lies in the fact the mold is often not easy to find. It likes to hide and can be harbored in any cool, damp place inside your home or place of business. Most people only think of showers and bathrooms as harboring mold, but truthfully, it can hide in attics, crawlspaces, closets, even inside the walls or under the floor.

Molds reproduce by forming tiny spores that are not visible to the naked eye. Mold spores are very hardy and can survive under conditions in which mold cannot grow, such as in dry and harsh environments. These spores travel through outdoor and indoor air. When the mold spores land on a surface where moisture is present, mold can then start to grow.

If you think this is something you have been experiencing in your home or place of business, call SERVPRO of Lakeland for an estimate. Don't spend another day suffering inside your own home.

Storage Nightmares

4/4/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Storage Nightmares This is the clean environment SERVPRO of Lakeland created to store and clean the salvageable items.

Are Your Items Safe In Storage?

It seems like every week here at SERVPRO of Lakeland provides our team an opportunity to work on something unique.

We complete countless numbers of commercial and residential jobs each week and each one is individually unique.

Homes and places of business are always at the forefront of our minds and most receive regular attention and maintenance. We see them everyday as we show up to work or return home after a long day.

But what about the personal belongings we don't keep at home or work?

Shipping containers, storage units, garages, attics and basements all provide extra space to store contents, but they can also provide a damp, dark space for mold spores to thrive.

Last week we had a customer whose belongings were being stored and then shipped across the country. Unfortunately, between the time sitting in storage and the cross country journey, a bulk of this customers items had been badly damaged by weather, moisture, and mold.

It is jobs like these that give SERVPRO of Lakeland new and unique opportunites to show what we can do. We were able to lead a coordinated effort with the insurance carrier and the customer to begin the process of making them whole again.

Mold doesn't confine itself to just the easy to clean, easy to remember items. For any mold damage you may experience, call SERVPRO of Lakeland today, (863)646-4213.

Grease Fires

3/31/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Grease Fires The aftermath of a commercial kitchen grease fire.

Grease Fire Do's and Dont's

There are many different ways a fire can break out, one of the most dangerous being a grease fire. If you lack experience putting out a grease fire, know that you do not treat it the same as you would a "standard" fire. There are certain things that you must do and things you absolutely must NOT do. Please consider the following:

Do

  • Turn off the stove or heat source
  • Smother the fire with the pot lid. Without oxygen, the fire cannot survive.
  • Use baking soda to douse the flames. Flour and other items will not work
  • Use a Class B dry chemical fire extinguisher
  • call 911

Don't

  • Try to put out the flames using water. It will splash the grease, causing the fire to spread
  • Move the item. This could also cause splashing, spreading and could potentially burn you
  • Try to use anything other than baking soda. It will not help

What To Do During a Flood Event

3/29/2017 (Permalink)

Storm Damage What To Do During a Flood Event Flood waters won't stop SERVPRO of Lakeland

Rains are coming...

Spring showers can often lead to flooding conditions in North Alabama. These tips will help reduce the impact spring floods that my happen on your property.

Watch for Pooling Water

Look for places around your property where water pools, and channel it away from buildings. Make sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris and they are directing water as intended.

Maintain Sump Pump

If you have a sump pump, check to be sure it is operational before water starts rising. Consider a back-up generator to ensure your pump works when you need it most. Contact your insurance agent to add coverage in case your sump pump fails.

Raise Storage Goods

Use shelving and/or pallets to keep storage items off the floor to reduce the impact of small floods. In many situations, raising boxes just a few inches will be enough to keep storage goods above the water line.

Cut Power if Necessary

As rising water approaches the level of electrical outlets, you risk having a live current flow through all the water. Cut the power if you can safely do so without standing in water. Otherwise, evacuate and contact an electrician to cut the power before you go back in for recovery.

Keep Storm Drains Clear

If you see water pooling around a storm drain, the drain may be clogged with debris. Clearing the debris will help keep the water flowing away from your neighborhood.

Be Aware on the Road

Be careful when driving during spring storms, especially when you hear flash flood warnings. Never drive into fully submerged roadway. The water surface will be at the same level as the pavement you can see. This view can deceive you into thinking the water is shallow because you cannot see how the road dips under the surface.

Act Fast

When a flood happens, you need to act fast to dry out any wet items, particularly structural materials like walls and flooring. Call SERVPRO® of Lakeland (863)646-4213 to extract water and mitigate any mold growth. Our franchise professionals have the training and experience to make flood damage “Like it never even happened.”

Fire Damage Fighting Fire with Fire.. Remediation Kitchen fire in Lakeland, FL

Recently, SERVPRO of Lakeland got a call from a friend of our family. She informed us that her neighbors had a fire in their home the night before and needed some help getting it cleaned up. Upon arriving to the scene of the incident, we realized it was going to be a large undertaking, including cleaning many contents, inventorying and disposing of contents, and removing most of the interior walls and fixtures of the house. The smoke damage and odor was so bad that the homeowners were just lucky to be out safe and have some of their belongings determined to be salvageable. We started working on the house immediately and have been working on cleaning contents and removing smoke odor for almost two weeks now. Make sure to stay tuned to our “before and after pictures” page to see the work we can do if fire and smoke damage affects your home or business. Also, check our YouTube page in the coming months, as we plan to have video from just after the fire, the middle of the cleaning process, and the finished result of what their home looks like when they move back in, so if this type of fire disaster ever happens to you, you will know what to expect from the process.

Spring Cleaning

3/27/2017 (Permalink)

A new season has just arrived in Lakeland, FL and it offers an opportunity to refresh your restaurant. Winter months normally mean windows stay shut, and dirt and grime from boots and heavy shoes gets tracked onto the floor. Similar to how people look forward to spring cleaning at home, you can do the same for your restaurant. SERVPRO of Lakeland offers plenty of services that can help your business start the season fresh!

Clean Your Air Ducts and HVAC

Your air ducts and HVAC unit work hard throughout the winter to keep your customers and employees warm. The ventilation system should be properly cleaned in the spring to make sure the air quality in your restaurant is not poor. If it has not been serviced for some time, your air could be circulating dust, pollen, odors and dirt and debris. Our technicians and equipment can clean out your system and make sure everyone breathes easier in the new season.

Kitchen Cleaning

Checking the hoods in the kitchen is usually a twice a year job, so what better time to start than for spring cleaning. Cleaning the pilots lights (if it is gas) is also a good idea. Just make sure to follow manufacturer’s instructions. Empty and sanitize the ice machine, and wipe down walls, ceilings and dry storage areas. SERVPRO of Lakeland offers great commercial cleaning options as well, so give us a call if there are items you want professionals to fix.

Rugs and Carpets

If your restaurant uses rugs or carpet, springtime is a great time to freshen them as well. If the furniture in your restaurant does not often move, tracks from normal foot traffic can start to wear down your rugs or carpets. When they become matted, these items also hold in an abundance of dust and debris that is carried in on shoes. A proper cleaning will get rid of the smells and the dust!

SERVPRO of Lakeland is only a phone call away if you need a professional to help freshen up your restaurant for spring. Get in contact today! (863)646-4213.

SERVPRO's Basic Steps for Water Removal

3/27/2017 (Permalink)

SERVPRO's Water Removal Process Can Help to Prevent Secondary Damage

SERVPRO observes a relatively simple process for our water removal jobs. Although many underlying concepts and intricacies complicate matters, our process is, at heart, only composed of three essential steps. First, we use water extractors to remove volumes of standing water that can be pumped out of the home. After this comes the drying phase, where we use carefully-positioned air movers to pick water up off of surfaces and get it into the air. Finally, to ensure that the now-saturated air does not cause additional water damage, we use dehumidifiers to chemically or thermally catch water droplets from the air and collect them into removable storage bins.

The first step, water extraction, worries homeowners the most but it is, in fact, one of the easiest steps in water removal jobs. While huge volumes of standing water can appear daunting and do indeed need heavy equipment to take care of properly, our industrial grade extractors can usually clear an area in a matter of hours.

Drying is perhaps the longest step of the project and is often done in tandem with dehumidification. SERVPRO technicians move in heavy-duty air movers to create powerful air flows in an area, catching water on all surfaces and bringing it into the air. This is an all-encompassing step, where we simultaneously dry out all materials including carpet, fabric, wood, laminate, and other common household elements.

Dehumidification may be done alongside drying, but is always done immediately after it at the latest. If the airborne water droplets are not dealt with quickly, they can cause additional problems throughout the home such as oxidation and reintroduction to surfaces. Dehumidifiers attract and collect water back into a liquid form, this time in easily-handled buckets that can easily be removed and handled.

SERVPRO of Lakeland is a local company with national resources backing up every water removal job we take. Call us 24/7 for our help with water removal and restoration at (863) 646-4213.

Fire and Smoke Damage Inside the HVAC

3/24/2017 (Permalink)

Fire Damage Fire and Smoke Damage Inside the HVAC The ductwork can hide harmul particulants in the air.

Where there's smoke, there's a headache..

Following a fire, SERVPRO of Lakeland Professionals pay careful attention to the HVAC system and ductwork to prevent the spread of soot and to eradicate a potential source of lingering smoke odor. If the system was operational at the time the fire occurred, chances are good that the system, including air registers and HVAC units, should be thoroughly cleaned to prevent continued circulation of soot and odor-causing particles that may have contaminated the system.

Depending on the size of the fire and the methods used to extinguish it, the duct system may also have been compromised by water. In as little as 24-48 hours, this moisture can provide the catalyst for mold and mildew growth inside the duct system, further degrading indoor air quality. If the duct system has been contaminated with water, your SERVPRO of Lakeland Professional can help locate the moisture and remove it before serious air quality problems can develop.

Contact SERVPRO of Lakeland at (863)646-4213 to learn more about air duct system cleaning following a fire damage and the value of maintaining clean air duct systems year-round

Why should I choose a professional restoration company for water intrusion/ damage?

  • Homeowners should not risk doing the work themselves as there may hidden water or moisture that can go undetected to the untrained eye. Taking into account that mold growth can occur in as little as 24-48 hours in the presence of moisture, undetected water damage can pose long term problems if not properly handled.
  • Due to the potential hazards associated with water-related damage, moisture and water should be handled by properly trained and equipped professionals to ensure complete and necessary drying to prevent future harm, extensive structural damage and possible contamination.
  • Improper cleanup could hinder property re-sale value.
  • Professional restoration companies have essential tools and techniques to measure moisture in the area to ensure proper and complete drying in a timely manner.
  • Water technicians should be fully aware of water or moisture-related characteristics to locate leaks or water damaged areas that may otherwise go unnoticed.
  • Homes and other properties are large and often expensive assets. Why run the risks associated with improper drying, deodorizing and disinfecting which can lead to potential secondary structural damage? Help protect your property’s value by calling the professionals at SERVPRO of Lakeland.

Mold Prevention

3/24/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold Prevention Mold growth is a serious issue inside your home.

Maintaining a healthy indoor environment in a commercial facility is a year-round endeavor. While it is true that every building has some mold spores present, unhealthy levels can quickly arise under the right circumstances – usually within 24-48 hours when excess moisture is present.

Periodic inspection and proper maintenance of a building, its plumbing system and the HVAC system is very important to detect potential problems in advance and to prevent moisture from entering the facility. This is especially true during the fall and winter months when the weather puts extra pressure on these systems and most indoor environments are primed for mild growth (i.e., warmer temperature settings, less air flow to help keep humidity levels under control, etc.) Even in buildings where maintaining a warm indoor environment is a non-issue, indoor air quality can still be impacted by mold species that thrive in cooler conditions.

SERVPRO of Lakeland is equipped with the proper equipment to help identify indoor air quality issues, including improper humidity levels, contaminated ductwork systems and moisture that may have accumulated behind walls or under flooring due to an undetected roof or plumbing leak.

Call us at SERVPRO of Lakeland for helpful information on how to prevent indoor air quality issues as part of your Emergency Response Profile development. (863)646-4213

What is Wet?

3/24/2017 (Permalink)

Water Damage What is Wet? Water can come from any number of places, not always just the obvious places.

When water damage is initially discovered, building occupants and property managers may be both surprised and perplexed. Their normal day-to-day functions can be disrupted, resulting in business downtime. Property owners and building occupants are often consumed with multiple questions and uncertainty as they evaluate the situation and consider the next step of action. “What do I do?” and “Who do I call?” are two commonly asked questions following a water damage discovery.

If your business or property suffers a water loss, immediately contact SERVPRO of Lakeland.

Professional drying and prompt action by experienced restorers following a water intrusion can make a big difference in mitigating structural damage and minimizing secondary damages.

SERVPRO of Lakeland understands the importance of timely response. When dealing with a water intrusion, time can be the differentiator between primary, secondary and permanent damage. The amount of time materials remain wet can also determine if they are restorable or must be replaced. Water impacts material immediately and the damage increases as time passes. For example, wood absorbs moisture quickly, which can result in swelling or staining; however, prompt splitting and warping. The professional restorer focuses on eliminating water and moisture quickly to prevent additional damage.

Upon arrival, SERVPRO of Lakeland's professional team will assess the situation to determine the extent of the damage, A technician will inspect all building components for water and moisture. Although water may only be visible in one room, it is very possible that surrounding areas have also been affected, Water can invade floors, ceilings and walls to find the lowest point within the structure. Water can seep through pinhole crevices and cracks in floors and walls travelling further down into the building. Surfaces such as wood, drywall and carpet pull water away from plain sight and into the interiors of the structure. Inspecting all building components and measuring the moisture level of not only the visibly affected area but also all surrounding areas helps ensure secondary or permanent damage does not occur because wet materials or building components were overlooked.

Knowledge, skill and equipment are all key elements in effective water removal and moisture damage. SERVPRO of Lakeland Technicians apply their industry knowledge, training and experience to measure the extent of moisture saturation and offer proper drying, deodorizing, and disinfecting for areas flooded or damaged by water.

Let SERVPRO of Lakeland assist you with all your commercial and residential needs. We are available 24 hours a day,7 days, a week 365 days a year. We can be reached at (863)646-4213

Storm Season

Storm Damage Storm Season Hurricane Hermine caused a storm surge that flooded this street and many local businesses and homes.

I Thought Hurricane Season Was Over

In the state of Florida, scientists have determined that there is a particular "season" in which storms are predicted to happen with the most frequency. It's called "Hurricane Season" and lasts from June 1 through November.

The reality is that the weather in Florida is unpredictable and a powerful storm can strike at any moment. In addition, the effects that this weather can have on your home can be disastrous regardless of what time of year it is.

Don't wait until the summer to start preparing for the upcoming weather.

-Make sure you know your evacuation routes and have an emergency plan for your home

-Make an emergency kit with batteries, flashlights, tools, a first aid kit and canned goods

   -Install Storm Shutters, if appropriate.

-Secure outdoor objects and leave low-lying areas

And, of course, if the storm should make it's way into your home or place of business, Call SERVPRO of Lakeland (863)646-4213 to make it "Like it never even happened."

Rising from the Ashes

A Long-Awaited Grand Re-Opening

This particular story is very near and dear to us here at SERVPRO of Lakeland. Last year this franchise and one of our clients went through an extremely harrowing ordeal. A local retirment community suffered a fire in the middle of the night in a resident's apartment. In addition to local fire and police departments, SERVPRO was on site within the hour.

None of us were quite prepared mentally for the toll this job would take both on the residents of this community and the amazing ownership team. The damage both from the fire and the ensuing deluge to put out the fire was extensive. It traveled for 4 floors before it was contained.

Fast forward to this past week. We were invited back by this retirement community for its Grand Re-opening. Through countless hours of labor by the local fire department and SERVPRO of Lakeland, followed by many weeks of construction and repair, we were able to truly make it "Like it never even happened."

The transformation was nothing short of breathtaking. Even better than that, however, was the warm welcome we received from both the residents of the community and its incredible staff. The gratitude they expressed towards our team is something we will not soon forget.

That is why we do it. If you should experience some kind of disaster to your home or place of business, call SERVPRO of Lakeland today. (863)646-4213.

The Potential Effects of Lingering Mold Damage

2/15/2017 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation The Potential Effects of Lingering Mold Damage Mold can hide in your walls and in your belongings.

Mold Remediation Can Prevent Adverse Health Problems

Water damage can be a harrowing ordeal to go through. If not handled by a professional, these situations can lead to secondary damages that can be hard to see or detect right away.

The biggest and most frightening of these damages is mold.

At the first sign of mold, most homeowners become concerned about how it will affect the structure of their houses as well as their family's health. Mold is a serious matter, and being proactive about fixing the problem will save you time, money, and stress.

If your home has mold damage in Lakeland, it's wise to work with a professional instead of trying to clean up the problem on your own. Here are some of the lasting effects of mold damage and how SERVPRO of Lakeland works to combat each one.

Poor Air Quality and Odors
One of the most prevalent signs that a home has mold spores is the development of a stale, musty odor. Some describe the smell as being an old, wet smell, similar to a wet carpet or pet. The smell of mold is unpleasant and will negatively affect your home's indoor environment, plus it's tough to get rid of without industrial grade equipment. Also, mold can have adverse effects on the health of the residents of the structure particularly in the elderly and small children. Not only do our technicians deodorize to make air fresher, but we also address normalizing humidity levels and extracting the moisture that causes mold in the first place.

Ruined Flooring and Furniture
If you have wood floors, carpet, area rugs, or furniture comprised of wood or fabric; fungi will eventually wear through your items if allowed to sit. We're able to eliminate moisture and make it so that mold can no longer thrive in your home or on your furniture and flooring. In many cases, our team can also sanitize and restore carpets and rugs with mold damage.

Destroyed Documents and Books
Mold spores are tiny and easily travel through the air. When they collect on books and documents, you may end up having to discard them for safety. SERVPRO has techniques and equipment that will not only prevent mold from spreading to your treasured documents, collectibles, and books, but we can also restore some of these items if they've already been affected by mold damage.

The team at SERVPRO of Lakeland is here to help ensure your home is protected from mold damage so you can have peace of mind. For a quote or to get more information about our mold damage remediation services, call us 24/7 at (863) 646-4213.

Fire Damage Say No to Soot When SERVPRO's Afoot Not every fire is a funeral pyre. Call SERVPRO of Lakeland to clean your fire/smoke damage today!

Fire and Smoke Damage May Be Trickier to Clean Than You Think

A house fire and the resulting damage can sometimes be a tricky situation to deal with.

The damage caused by the fire, itself, is obvious. It leaves furniture charred and smoldering. It leaves walls scorched and warped. And it leaves homeowners with their lives in disarray.

The damage that might not be so obvious, however, can be the trickiest to clean.  Soot builds up in layers that become solidified and tough to eliminate. Some areas need to be wiped and scrubbed with chemicals several times to eradicate the lingering effects of the fire.

It is in situations like this, that you need to call the professionals at SERVPRO of Lakeland. When our cleaning teams arrive, they promptly differentiate salvageable items from charred debris, taking the things creating the strongest odors out for cleaning. Then we go to work on the ridding the structure of any evidence that a fire ever even occurred.

There are many different precautions used when cleaning a fire. To the everyday citizen, the surface may appear clean after a good wipe down, but the truth is that the process is way more involved.

For example, the average homeowner may be unaware that water-based cleaning items can cause spots to bleed into plaster walls. Also, if left unattended or not properly treated by a professional, the air quality inside the home can suffer greatly and have lasting effects on the health of those residing there.

To the untrained eye, the issue may appear to have been fixed. However, the impacts of indoor air pollution for numerous months can manifest itself later in the form of increased respiratory discomfort.

Companies like SERVPRO of Lakeland are leading experts in fire restoration. They are trained to help remove your belongings with great care as well as clean and store them until your property has been restored to its original condition. We also are constantly aware of the human element involved. We know we are not just cleaning a building but someone’s home.

If you or someone you know comes face to face with fire or smoke damage inside their home or place of business…

Water Damage

Water Damage Water Damage This fellowship hall was flooded end to end. SERVPRO of Lakeland extracted over 600 gallons of water from this building.

Water Damage. Living in Florida, one might say that water might be the biggest threat to any homeowner living in this southernmost state. We call it a water "intrusion" because its water that is not supposed to be there. It comes from leaky or broken pipes, clogged drains, wind-driven rain, flood water among countless other vehicles of destruction.

SERVPRO of Lakeland, smack in the middle of the state has seen a little bit, (ok, actually a lot) of everything. Call it our "bread and butter," or our "wheelhouse," but nobody handles a water loss quite like SERVPRO. From storm response to the dreaded late night water loss, we are here to service our clients 24/7.

This particular loss originated from an old copper pipe hiding behind an innocuous office wall. The pipe leaked and ran for hours as the owner of the building frantically searched for the shut off valve. When it was all said and done the enitre office building was flooded.

SERVPRO of Lakeland arrived with our state of the art equipment and extracted over 600 gallons of water. Then, we got to work. This church was able to open its doors the following week due to the swift and professional response of our crew members.

They say it takes 10,000 hours to become an expert in something. If that is in fact the case, then the people of Lakeland can rest assured that the experts at SERVPRO of Lakeland can handle any water loss thrown our way!

Not only do we do it, but we treat each cleaning with the same professionalism and unparalelled customer service that we would any water loss or mold remediation. We have several crew members with what amounts to two decades worth of carpet and tile cleaning expertise.

Snowbird Extravaganza

1/30/2017 (Permalink)

Community Snowbird Extravaganza We camped out at this booth for 2 days sharing information and freebies with our favorite Snowbirds!

Every year hundreds of thousands of people, old and young, trek from the northern parts of the country to the South for the comfort of a nice, warm southern winter. For most, Florida not only provides a vacation destination but also a second home of sorts.

It's these seasonal southerners that SERVPRO of Lakeland looks to connect with at the Snowbird Extravaganza, an event held annually at the Lakeland Center and hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Lakeland. This venue gives us a place to connect with a contingent of northerners that we might not otherwise have a chance to reach.

While setting up our booth, eager to tell people the services we offer, we discovered that many of these potential customers were not only familiar with our company, but also recognized the power of the brand name. As expected, the SERVPRO name travels well. Most had either used a SERVPRO franchise in the past or knew of someone who had worked with us and by and large the response was overwhelmingly positive.

Even though they may not live down here full-time, some of the more seasoned travelers were nevertheless concerned about the air quality and cleanliness of their second homes. They know they can trust fair pricing and quality work when using SERVPRO of Lakeland for any of their needs. From carpet cleanings to duct cleanings and everything in between, SERVPRO of Lakeland is committed to making these "part-time homes" as clean and as safe as possible.

This two-day event was an excellent opportunity to further our reach and reward all those kind words with coupons and promotional materials. It is one event that SERVPRO of Lakeland will sponsor every year. We love our Snowbirds!!!

Weathering the Storm

Storm Damage Weathering the Storm This living room was flooded due to the storm surge created by Hurricane Matthew.

By: Justin Dorman

2016 was a year rife with storm systems and rising waters encroaching the Florida coastline. We saw homes destroyed and families uprooted by the ensuing devastation caused by Hurricanes Hermine and Matthew. From wind-driven rain entering homes through sheer force, to water rising as high as four feet and settling into living rooms and bedrooms, the devastation spread far and wide.

I truly believe that these are the moments when SERVPRO shines. It's hard to put yourself in the shoes of a homeowner who is suffering through that kind of devastation if you've never experienced it. The look in their eyes suggests a feeling of panic and fear for the immediate future. They can only see the mess that lay in front of them and the arduous road to recovery ahead.

Enter: SERVPRO. Our team pulled into the town of a neighboring franchise the day after the hardest part of the storm subsided and, with their help, began to work immediately. The labor was hard and often times unpleasant, but we attacked each situation with an aplomb and professionalism that gave each one of these customers comfort and allowed them to feel as if these catastrophic losses "never even happened."

The look in the eyes of our customers evolved from one of uncertainty to one of trust, understanding and eventually relief. That transition makes what we do worth it every single day. The commitment we make to our customers gives them faith in us to make them whole. And it is one of the many reasons I am proud to work for SERVPRO of Lakeland.

Storm Damage HURRICANE HERMINE River flooding due to Hurricane Hermine.

SERVPRO Of Lakeland was there for families in need due to the storm surge. We saw rivers go over their banks and the gulf enter into many homes. It was remarkable how many Lakeland residents had property on the  river or on the gulf. This was one of those times I'm so glad that our expectations in customer service is what we pride ourselves on, along with other things. Due to those expectations, our customers had no thought of using anyone else for their second property on the river or gulf and knew that no matter where it was, we would be there to help them in their time of need and if we couldn't, we would get another franchise to help. Our reputation is on the line every day and we always work hard to rise above the norm here at SERVPRO Of Lakeland and anywhere we might wind up to help with hurricane or storm damage. Our customers are#1 in our book!

I love this city and its people, I love helping others in a time of need and making it "Like it never even happened" as much as possible. There is no better feeling than making another person feel better due to a loss or tragedy and helping them thru it. I came from a very loving home and was born with a big heart, which  is transferred thru to my business, employees, and the way our customers are treated. Your house is not just a house to us, it's your HOME and deserves to be treated as such. We use Core Values to Represent SERVPRO of Lakeland. 1. Integrity 2. Commitment to Excellence 3. Accountability 4. Respect . These are a few of the values we represent when we walk into your life and your home to help. I could go on for days on our love of the people of Lakeland, but that will have to be another blog. Thanks for listening Lakeland!

Modifications to Industry Standard for Mold Removal by Robert Lay

4/26/2016 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Modifications to Industry Standard for Mold Removal by Robert Lay Proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) application for mold remediation project.

After years of scare tactics presented by national media outlets, the IICRC pulled the reigns back on fly - by - night restoration companies that claimed to disinfect or remove mold through encapsulation, ozone, or other decontaminants. In doing so, the S-520 was created to help provide a national standard that centered mostly around "source removal" of affected material, as we well as proper standards for creating containment, establishing negative air pressure, and properly removing mold. This document contains a wealth of knowledge pertaining to the health effects of mold exposure and provides usable advice to mold remediators in keeping employees safe. As the restoration industry is a constantly evolving industry, the standard is often considered a 'living' document. Like most industries, change is driven by technological advancements.

What You Should Know About Mold

Mold is a naturally occurring organism and certain levels are considered acceptable in both indoor and outdoor levels. These levels are often referred to as Condition 1 type mold. When physical growth is achieved (Condition 3) on building materials, it has the propensity to produce a Condition 2 type situation where spores and hyphae settle on surfaces. Actual growth includes growth of any type of mold (active, dormant, visible or hidden). Not all mold is harmful, but certain types can cause health effects to immune deficient or allergenic prone individuals.

What Has Changed in the Latest Version

Verbage has been the biggest alteration in the newest version of the S520. Better definitions of trigger words are provided to help remediation specialists better interpret guidelines of the standard of care. Misting is more widely accepted for dust suppression. Rules for better servicing sensitive environment facilities like retirement homes and hospitals have been outlined to include real time data logging system. This decreases risk of cross contamination and helps ensure that Air Filtration Devices and Negative Air Machines are operating properly. Mold contamination of Air Conditioning Systems is also better outlined. Use of EPA approved sealants or coatings are more widely observed. Lastly, contractors may now perform Post Remediation Evaluation, but a 3rd party Industrial Hygienist will still be needed to perform Post Remediation Verification.

How Does This Help Protect You and Your Home or Business

Dampness or visible fungi can be found in 50% of residences across the country (Mudarri and Fisk, 2007). At current there are no accepted guidelines defining normal fungal ecology. Comparative or control samples are needed to assess what can be dictated as "safe" however this does not incorporate certain variables like geography, occupancy, land use, time of year, and time of day. The IICRC S-520 -2015 helps bridge the gap in using technological advances and definitive verbage to reiterate proper remediation efforts are used and quantified in your home or business. Indoor air quality is directly related to personal health and  indoor health professionals are constantly being held to a higher standard as more information becomes available.

Here to Help - The Newest Software That's Helping Save Commercial Customers Thousands

Building Services Here to Help - The Newest Software That's Helping Save Commercial Customers Thousands Is your business prepared to survive water damage, smoke damage, or a mold issue?

by Robert Lay

Recently, SERVPRO rolled out their newest Ready Plan software called the Emergency Ready Profile. This iOS platform software assists commercial clients in establishing an emergency response plan in the event of a flood, storm, or water damage that occurs in Lakeland. Not only does this service provide valuable information about shut off valves, breaker panels, and drainage systems, but it helps establish a plan for communication between materially invested parties, insurance representatives, vendors, and employees. When catastrophe strikes, sound preparation takes the place of chaos, and information that may not to be able to be accessed is readily available for all parties.

Why is this important?

1)      Time is of the essence when a pipe bursts. Water can be flowing out from a broken pipe at hundreds of gallons per minute depending on the size of the supply line. Every second spent scrambling to find shut off valves is another opportunity for water to cause damage. In predetermining the locations of these valves, thousands of dollars can be saved by preventing further damage.

2)      In dealing with vendors, having information such as your insurance carrier, your emergency response budget (a not to exceed limit), and determining authorized representatives will help assist in making the claims process go smoothly. Knowing what your policy will and won’t cover will alleviate doubt that you may have to pay these costs out of pocket.

3)      50% of business never reopen after a catastrophic loss. Having an emergency service plan that protects data, assembles a chain of command, and limits the amount of business interruption could mean the difference between your business surviving or falling to the wayside. The upfront cost during these types of events can be crippling if a company hasn’t budgeted properly. Too often, we have seen fire and smoke damage cause irrepressible damage, and without the ability to provide a draw, companies struggle to maintain the necessary income to keep their doors open.

4)      Knowing your vendors is crucial to getting the type of response you may need in Lakeland. While many restoration companies exist, very few can specialize in commercial damage clean up, and even less have a sound reputation of providing quality service. Interviewing vendors to determine capacity and quality is crucial before a disaster strikes.

Putting off the creation of an Emergency Ready Plan is a gamble that most people cannot afford to take. Find out more by calling your local water damage restoration firm or insurance claims specialist.

Ways to Prevent A/C Units from Causing Condensation and Mold

9/14/2015 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Ways to Prevent A/C Units from Causing Condensation and Mold This picture shows the internal hygrometer inside of a dehumidifier. If relative humidity is above 60%, you may have an issue that needs attention.

By Robert Lay

Across Lakeland we have experienced consistently high humidity levels as afternoon showers have turned into all day flooding. This has wreaked havoc on the propensity of air handlers to keep up with customers’ demands. Throughout the last couple of weeks, we have experienced several insurance claims in both commercial and residential dwellings that related to air conditioner condensation. While a little dampness on a unit or a duct may sound harmless, the resulting affects on your insulation, drywall, and other building materials may be detrimental. Often times these issues go unnoticed and when they are discovered, mold growth is usually an issue. Please follow a few of these easy rules to make sure that you don’t end up with a larger problem:

1)      Inspect HVAC units often. We aren’t just talking about taking a peak up at your vents every once in awhile, take a ladder and go inspect your return and handler frequqently. Note any discoloration, corrosion or standing water. Look for water staining around the area that may have been caused by condensation or faulty components.

2)      Get Your AC Unit Serviced. Once a year, your unit should be serviced by an HVAC professional. They will be able to help identify any potential issues that you may encounter and curb water damage in your home or business.

3)      Purchase a Hygrometer. Testing your indoor air quality can often times be as easy as knowing the indoor relative humidity and temperature. Any sharp fluctuations in relative humidity are a large indication that there may be a problem with your system.   Regardless of where you set your thermostat, if you have relative humidity levels higher than 60% you are putting your home or business at risk of secondary damage including mold or condensation.

4)      Watch windows and vents. Mildew and condensation should not build up on these areas if your HVAC unit is properly sized for the area in which it is trying to condition. If you are seeing discoloration around your vents or noticing mold buildup on window caulking you may need to call a mold remediation specialist.

5)      Don’t ignore your senses. If you walk into your home and smell an earthy or musky odor you may have a mold issue. If you walk into your business and your skin instantly feels sticky and wet, your AC system may not be operating properly. If you see staining or discoloration that wasn’t seen before, don’t turn a blind eye. Using common sense and listening to your instincts are often the best ways to prevent further damage.

While historic flooding can create some unavoidable obstacles, these easy tips may save your home from mold or water intrusion.

House Flooding Due to Intense Rain in Lakeland

8/17/2015 (Permalink)

Storm Damage House Flooding Due to Intense Rain in Lakeland Overtime, moisture can cause longterm damage and even mold with your home or business. Quick action should be taken if you experience a flood.

Flooding occured throughout Lakeland this past weekend, affecteding several Lakeland homes and businesses. It was reported that between 3.1 and 3.5 inches of rain fell on Sunday causing damage to areas thorughout Lakeland, FL. If your house or business experienced any moisture intrustion, there are some things you should keep in mind while trying to mitigate the damage and keeping your families and employees safe:

1) Flood water is treated as Category 3 water by restoration specialists and insurance companies. This means that it is referred to as grossly contaminated. It could contain harmful bacteria and has the potential to cause health issues to patrons if not mitigated properly.

2) Highly porous materials such as carpeting and drywall should be removed in most of these situations. Often times these materials cannot be treated with traditonal drying techniques. Once those materials are removed, all remaining areas such as concrete and wood framing should be treated with antimicrobials and then dried out properly.

3) Not everyone has flood insurance. Flood insurance is often contained in a seperate policy. Not all insurance companies offer flood insurance and you should check your policy to see what is covered.

4) Water damage causes more issues the longer you wait. Materials continue to soak up moisture and microbial growth occurs within a couple days. Without quick action, the indoor environment of your home could be at jeopordy.

If you experience any water damage issues in Lakeland please contact your professional, local cleanup team for assistance and stay safe!

Fire and Water Damage in Lakeland Caused By Bad Storm

by Ed Davis

After a vicious storm came through earlier this week, SERVPRO of Lakeland responded to an emergency fire and water mitigation call in this Lakeland residence. SERVPRO has begun working with the homeowner to establish an insurance claim. Thankfully no one was hurt during this event.

Generators, Air Scrubbers, Dehumidifiers, and Deodorization devices will all be placed throughout the home in order to begin mitigation of the smoke odor and contents. Thanks to the quick action of the fire department and the homeowner, the fire did not spread further through the house.

With the higher humidity levels that have persisted this week in Lakeland, FL, SERVPRO of Lakeland has taken preventitve messures to maintain a safe climate within the home through the use of dehumidifiers. This will prevent further flood damage and secondary effects of any water intrustion caused by the storm of fire depression efforts.

SERVPRO of Lakeland will continue to provide updates as the job progresses.

Mold Remediation: A Review of How Technology Can Influence an Entire Industry

Mold Remediation Mold Remediation: A Review of How Technology Can Influence an Entire Industry The latest air scrubber from Dri-Eaz. These machines have drastically improved their performance while shrinking in size.

by Robert Lay, General Manager at SERVPRO of Lakeland

The use of ozone among restoration professionals has become widely accepted.  It is most commonly used in this field as a high grade deodorization technique that can combat strong odors like pet odor and even smoke. While proving successful in these areas, the practice of using ozone has expanded into microbial remediation as in certain concentrations of O3 proves lethal. The EPA has released recent information that Ozone use should not be used in mold remediation as hypae and spores are not eliminated during the process, thus potential allergen agents still exist. The IICRC, our industry standard, even suggests against the use of nontraditional forms of mold remediation; however, countless professionals still insist that this technique is effective. This literary review hopes to shine some light on this particular subject and the potential for advanced technology in microbiological remediation.

What is Ozone and how does it Work?

Ozone is the triatomic form of oxygen. While atmospheric oxygen (O2) remains the more commonly known molecule, ozone, or O3, has an additional oxygen atom that reacts with other molecules. In this way, this unstable atom will react with other atoms to break them down, thus neutralizing odors.

Building Ecology and the Effects of Indoor Pollution

Building composition, activity, and use all relate to indoor environmental condition. While several baselines have been created to determine air quality, building ecology is relatively based upon its occupant’s sensitivity to their surroundings. Pollution generation within comes from any number of primary or secondary agents including bioeffluents, mold, smoke, byproducts of HVAC systems, and various other Volatile Organic Compounds (herein: VOC’s). (Mitchel, Zhang). In reality, VOC’s, by comparison, are consistently higher indoors than outdoors (Mitchel, Zhang). Normal use (cooking, water heating, cooling and moving, cleaning products) produces VOC’s that pass through filters and HVAC units and can cause irritation or allergies to its patrons. For this reason, it is important to constantly monitor indoor environments, especially when considering your ventilation systems (Air Ducts, HVAC, Returns, Vents).

The Transition of Ozone Use to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Ozone has been used heavily in water purification efforts for some time to deter biological growth. In 1997, ozone use was accepted as generally safe for food contact applications (U.S. FDA 1997). Currently, it is used for the post harvest treatment of fish and fruit, in order to remove the presence of mycotoxin contamination (mold growth) and insects. Eventually school of thought transferred to the restoration industry. If ozone could deter mold growth in fruit and vegetable processing, could it remove mold growth in homes?

According to one study conducted in 2008, ozone was reported to have successfully inactivated colony-forming fungal units both in a “laboratory and simulated field condition on various surfaces” (Hudson, Sharma, 2009). The question then becomes does inactive mold still present a hazard to occupants and is this sufficient for remediation purposes?

Modern Day Mold Removal, Remediation, and Treatment

The EPA has completed several reviews on the current status of mold remediation processes and the use of ozone across throughout the industry (EPA, 1996). Current OSHA and EPA guidelines shy away from ozone use for indoor air pollution as the positives often outweigh the negatives. Both occupants and technicians could be at risk of respiratory issues if ozone is used improperly or at too high of a concentration. In addition, both inactive and active mold particulates can cause the same health affects if inhaled.

If used properly however, ozone may be used in conjunction with other cleaning methods. A pre-ozone treatment could potentially limit hazards to employees prior to remediation. While source control should always be the number one priority in any hazardous remediation effort, shunning technology will limit the efficiency of air quality improvement (SERVPRO of Lakeland, 2015).

Other Technological Advances Used In Microbial Remediation

Efforts have been made to reduce the impacts of mold removal through other means as well. Dry ice blasting, hydroxyl use, and even UV light disbursement have all entered into the restoration industry as means to assist in the sanitization of an affected area. These methods take additional training and in some cases additional safety precautions for technicians that are completing the projects. These techniques, while effective in disinfecting areas, still need to be combined with more traditional types of remediation (Containments, Negative Air Pressure, Air Scrubbing, etc.) in order to properly remove mold growth.

Indoor air quality should be constantly monitored, as air pollution can be caused by a variety of issues. If you think you have a mold problem, please don’t hesitate to call in a professional as these problems get worse with time. Mold can hurt the value of a home, but it can be easily treated if the right company is hired to remediate the problem. Make sure that your remediation company isn’t doing more harm than good in your home.

General HVAC/ Air Duct and Dryer Vent Cleaning Lakeland Fl Air Duct Cleaning Lakeland

Did you know SERVPRO of Lakeland cleans HVAC/air ducts and dryer vents? If you were not aware of these two great services, here is some helpful information on these two great services.

HVAC and Air Duct Cleaning:

Cleaning your air ducts professionally is one of the best things you can do for your home or office’s indoor air quality. With indoor air pollutants being 4 to 7 times higher than outside cleaning your ductwork is one of the easiest ways to lower that number a great deal, especially considering most people spend more than 80% of their time indoors. Here at SERVPRO of Lakeland we use a high efficiency HEPA filtered system that is designed specifically to clean air ducts and dryer vents in order to have the greatest success in reducing indoor air pollutants. Call SERVPRO of Lakeland today to have your Air Ducts Cleaned in Lakeland, Fl.

Dryer Vent Cleaning:

One of the leading causes of fires in homes is from dryer vents not being cleaned properly. The increased back up of lent and debris combined with the heat produced from dryers is a recipe for disaster. One great way to lessen the chances of fire from a dryer is to have SERVPRO of Lakeland come clean the vents out with our HEPA filtered vacuum system. This system is designed to get air pollutants out of the air, so cleaning large debris and lent out of a dryer vent is no problem for our high quality equipment. Call SERVPRO of Lakeland today to have your Dryer Vents Cleaned in Lakeland Fl.

Fast Response to Water Damage in Commercial Complex

Commercial Fast Response to Water Damage in Commercial Complex Commercial Storm Damage Response by SERVPRO of Lakeland

Just two days before Thanksgiving the students at Florida Southern College were preparing to attend their final classes before their break, when an unusual downpour started. There was an abnormal amount of rain dropped on the campus of Florida Southern College between the hours of 9 and 10 am.

Our crews arrived on site within the 20 minutes of the call and began extracting water from their art and science buildings, as well as their main performing hall Branscomb Auditorium. Our crews acted with swiftness and determination and were able to use all of the tools at our disposal to have much of the water extracted by the end of business that day.

That was the easy part. Now came the hard part, bringing enough equipment and manpower to have every wet area of these buildings dry by the time the students arrived back on campus for class on Monday, and to make matters worse it is a holiday weekend and most of our crew was scheduled to be out of town or had plans with their families. After exhausting our inventory of drying equipment and borrowing some equipment from other SERVPRO franchises we were able to have most of the fans and dehumidifiers set by the time we left campus that night.

Now the monitoring and waiting game began. Over Thanksgiving Day, Black Friday, and through the weekend two of our staff members showed up on the campus to monitor and remove, or reposition, equipment until the campus was dry on Sunday evening. Monday when the staff and students arrived at their first class they had no inclination that we were ever there or there was water flowing in to the classrooms just 6 days before. We truly did make it “like it never even happened”.

This job marked the largest single commercial water loss SERVPRO of Lakeland has ever handled on its own, and we will continue to grow and learn, making it true that there is no job too big or too small for SERVPRO.

Commercial Water Damage Lakeland, Fl

Commercial Commercial Water Damage Lakeland, Fl Water Damage Lakeland Commercial Property

Recently the SERVPRO of Lakeland Team attended a large loss conference in Orlando. This meeting was very constructive for our team as it gave us more knowledge and tools to work with in the event of a large-scale water or fire damage in Lakeland or Polk County. At the meeting we made some key connections with the southeast large loss team based out of Nashville, TN. This connection is very important, because we now have the ability to make one phone call and have a semi truck full of equipment and manpower in town, within 24 hours. Situations like this would include multiple levels of flooding in large buildings, such as a hotel flood, courthouse water loss, or large commercial real estate building leaks. It could also include multi unit housing structure losses, such as apartment complexes or condo associations. In situations like this, time is of the utmost importance. While we here at SERVPRO of Lakeland we have the ability to deal with many disasters on our own, we may not have the equipment necessary to complete the drying process after our initial 24-hour water extraction period. This is why it is so important to have the ability to get equipment and manpower within 24 hours of the loss, to assist with phases two and three, the drying and demolition. Our new arrangement with our Large Loss partner should make any large building owner or manager feel at ease, knowing that not only is SERVPRO of Lakeland here to assist, but we also have the backing of our other 1600 franchises and large loss response unit. Be sure to call Josh to find out about things you can do to make sure the commercial building you own or manage is ready in time of disaster at (863) 646-4213.

South Lakeland Mold Removal

Mold Remediation South Lakeland Mold Removal Mold Removal Customer Satisfaction Form

An AC condenser produced a leak in the attic of this south Lakeland home. Unfortunately, this went undetected and caused a mold issue that needed the attention of SERVPRO of Lakeland. Using S-520 protocol and extensive experience, SERVPRO of Lakeland remediated the mold in a safe and timely fashion so that this family was able to get back to a safe living environment. Since the remediation, the family has claimed that they have already noticed an improvement in their air quality.

SERVPRO of Lakeland built containment and created negative air pressure within the affected areas in order to reduce any concern of cross contamination. The affected drywall was removed, packaged, and disposed of in a safe way. Then the affected area was treated with a biocide and HEPA vacuumed. The studs were dried so that this problem would not persist and air scrubber made sure to remove any remaining particulates.

The customer was immensely pleased with SERVPRO’s effort. On our “certificate of satisfaction: job completion” form, SERVPRO of Lakeland received all 10’s for customer service. The Job Completion COS, which is protocol on every job for SERVPRO of Lakeland, is attached above. Please visit our before and after page to see a couple photographs from the job.

Community Lakeland Water Restoration Residents of Bartow and Lakeland Learning about Fire Water and Mold Removal Marketing

This morning our Sales and Marketing Director, Josh Marazzito gave a speech to the Lakeland Business Leaders on the topic of Generational Marketing. He was able to share his marketing strategies that work for water removal, mold remediation, and fire and smoke clean up, and teach people how to incorporate those in to their markets based on the generation they are reaching out to. For instance there is a much different way to connect to a first time homeowner that is 30 and has a water loss, than an 80-year woman with mold in her home. SERVPRO of Lakeland prides us in being able to communicate and reach any age person in Lakeland, Bartow, Winter Haven, or anywhere in the Polk County Area that may find them in a disaster situation.

SERVPRO of Lakeland, Behind the Green Vans

Have you ever seen those bright green vans driving around the Grasslands Community? Ever wonder what they are or who is in them? Well we have your answer, get ready to meet the SERVPRO of Lakeland team!

SERVPRO of Lakeland is one of the top restoration companies in Polk County, and they take great pride in their work. Larry Riddle is the owner/ operator of the Lakeland franchise of SERVPRO, and feels the key component of their success is their commitment to customer service. After spending more than ten years in the psychiatric health field, he was ready for a change, but still wanted to be around people and help them in their time of need. Larry found an opportunity for the change he needed in a golf game about 14 years ago. Larry says “When we respond to an emergency service call we often find a frantic customer, who is not sure what to do to get their home or business back to normal. The feeling you get when you can help someone realize that everything will be ok, makes the long hours completely worth it. Larry says “his passion for customer service and helping others has always been with him and he has passed that trait on to his employees.”

Who they Are:

Larry and Cathy Riddle own SERVPRO and have been married for eight years. They have three children, Samantha (25) is in graduate school in Philadelphia, Alex (24) recently graduated from Florida Southern and works for Publix, and Austin (17) is a junior at Lake Region High School and stars in his own garage band.  Larry and Cathy enjoy spending time with their family and going fishing on the weekends. Larry says “the most important thing in life is family, and without mine I wouldn’t be where I am today, in life or business.” Larry also considers his crew part of his family and says that it has taken him 14 years to get the guys he has and he wouldn’t trade them for the world.

The SERVPRO of Lakeland crew is lead by the General Manager, Robert Lay. Robert moved to Lakeland in middle school and attended The University of Florida before working on the gulf oil spill project. Robert moved back to Lakeland shortly thereafter. Damage restoration and assessment has become Robert’s specialty and he feels constantly challenged by the unpredictable nature of the business. Some of you may remember is mother and father Bayre and Robbie Lay who lived in Grasslands for a while. Another crewmember that has close ties to Lakeland and Grasslands is Josh Marazzito, whose parents still reside in the Enclave. Josh grew up in Lakeland and currently lives in Tampa but drives to Lakeland daily to work. When we asked Josh why he makes the commute every day, he responded, “The crew and energy around our business are unbelievable.” The part of the crew that brings the energy, and is the first ones to arrive on scene in the time of emergency, is Richard and Shawn. Richard is the production manager and he lives in Lakeland with his wife Adena and their four children, Daylon, Kayden, Ella, and Emily. Shawn, the lead carpet and tile technician, moved to Lakeland about 4 years ago after owning his own carpet and restoration business in New York. Shawn is married to Leah, and they have two children, Jacob and Arie. Larry says of Richard and Shawn, “those guys are invaluable to our franchise, the way they treat our customers and care about the job they do is what makes me most proud of them.”

What They Do:

SERVPRO of Lakeland labels themselves as fire, water, and mold restoration specialists, but there is so much that falls into that description. SERVPRO of Lakeland also cleans carpet, and tile and grout, as well as specializing in deodorization, biohazard removal, and marble restoration. We are large enough to respond to any sized disaster, but pride ourselves in being a locally owned business.

If you need a floor surface in your home cleaned, SERVPRO of Lakeland has your answer. SERVPRO of Lakeland specializes in steam cleaning carpet with top of the line SERVPRO approved cleaning solutions. SERVPRO of Lakeland also cleans tile and grout. Shawn says “often time’s people are not aware that we can also clean their tile and grout, when they let me clean just a small area in their home, and see the difference, they seem to want the rest of the house done immediately”. Shawn is also certified in marble polishing, a rare and coveted certification from IICRC. To see some photos of the amazing work that SERVPRO of Lakeland can do on floor cleaning services, check them out online at SERVPROlakeland.com.

Have you ever thought about what you would do if your washing machine over flowed, or a pipe burst in your house, and there was water everywhere? Call SERVPRO of Lakeland. These guys have a 24-hour emergency services line, and are on site immediately. In fact they say they far exceed the 1-4-8-rule set for them by their national corporation. The 1-4-8 rule is that they will contact you within the hour, be on scene within four hours, and contact your insurance adjuster with 8 hours (if necessary). Larry says that around 90% of the time they blow that rule out of the water, and at least one technician will be on scene within one hour.

In the event that your home is affected by large-scale damage, SERVPRO of Lakeland is able to communicate directly with insurance adjusters and carriers through the hundreds of preferred vendor programs that we have initiated. This makes the claims process move as efficiently as possible and helps return your home to its pre-loss state in a timely fashion.   We have completed restoration projects of all sizes and use a standardized pricing system for insurance agents that prevent erroneous costs to the homeowner.

The experts at SERVPRO of Lakeland are also certified in assisting with mold and fire incidents. “Indoor environments are our specialty. We use the term specialize, because we are each certified for any catastrophe that could exist in your home. We aren’t here to just sell piece of mind to our customers. We are in the business of restoration, and restoration has become less about construction and more about science. We have a professional standard and expectations to make sure that the job is completed right”, says Robert.  If you think you have a mold issue, or have a water emergency call the 24-hour line at (863) 646-4213.

Larry says ‘if you have a question about cleaning, deodorization, mold, or water, SERVPRO of Lakeland can handle it.” SERVPRO of Lakeland has been working in the Grasslands community for nearly 14 years, and has done work at many homes in the community including the Wall’s, Cannon’s, and even the golf clubhouse. Trust the guys at SERVPRO of Lakeland for all of your remediation, restoration, and cleaning needs.

Disaster Restoration and Storm Clean Up

5/13/2014 (Permalink)

Storm Damage Disaster Restoration and Storm Clean Up Storm damaged contents line a recently flooded street.

By: Josh Marazzito

I remember last Wednesday vividly. As we all poured into the office, our attention was quickly diverted to the television. Heavy rains and rising streams and rivers were escalating throughout southern Alabama and northwestern Florida. The first pictures flashed across the screen of highways being drowned by floodwater and we all began to think the same thing: storm response.

It's not often that we pursue out of town work, but as part of one of the biggest disaster cleanup franchises on earth, we obviously don't shy away from it. Excitement starts taking place of the awe, as the phone calls start pouring in like the rain from this storm. "SERVPRO of Lakeland....are you guys in?" asked one of the storm team mobilizers.

"Wouldn't miss it."

We left early the next morning. The drive was tireless and long, but neither of us needed caffeine. The excitement of heading straight into the heart of something that everyone was turning away from kept us both on the edge of our toes. Around Tallahassee the storm started slowing us down. Blinding rain separated our caravan into a shadow of it's once dominant, lime green prowess. Even our usually fearless production manager, Richard, slowed his lead foot to the pace of a snowbird.

At last we arrived in Pensacola, a town that I have vacationed in often, and grown fond of. Even a couple miles after exiting I-10, we both were speechless by the extent of the damage. Entire roads were eroding away, trees were at the mercy of which way the water was moving, and houses were absorbing water like sponges. The damage seemed almost overwhelming.

We often times say that we are in the rare situation of meeting people on the worst day of their lives. This couldn't be truer as we began receiving jobs from our headquarters. Houses had become swimming pools and devastated homeowners were left with nothing more than a soggy pair of shoes and whatever they could move away from the rising water.

In our first encounter with a homeowner, nearly everything was a loss: motorcycles, cribs, beds, photo albums. The heartbreak of this situation was almost unbearable as she sorted through soaked paperwork trying to find her insurance information. Being in this line of work I constantly remind myself that these situations always work themselves out, but it was hard to see past floating books and picture frames. Richard told a joke that somehow irked a smile from her face. At this point, we all swallowed hard and realized it was time to get to work.

Over the next week, we encountered several more of these situations. We did our best to get to every customer, but the numbers became impossible to keep up with. Houses were literally floating away. One such job exposed a river of murky water underneath the foundation.

We still have crews on the ground in Pensacola and probably will through the middle of the month, but I keep coming back to the same thought: I will never be without flood insurance. I also will always remember to review it thoroughly to make sure the policy covers my contents and home. The worst part about the process was seeing homeowners that thought they had full coverage, when in fact they they only had partial coverage or none at all. I feel grateful that we were able to help a few of the numerous families affected by this freak storm; I just wish we could have helped more.

Disaster Response and Water Restoration Lakeland, Fl

Water Damage Disaster Response and Water Restoration Lakeland, Fl Get Your Emergency Ready Profile Today

By Larry Riddle

At 4 am you are awoken by the bark of a dog or a crying baby. You wipe the haze from your eyes, pull the sheets away, and place your feet on the floor. Every other night, this seems routine, but tonight you feel the squishy, coolness of a wet carpet and realize that something isn’t right. Panic ensues as you shake your wife, turn on the lights, and realize that the inside of your house has now become a swimming pool. It is quite unfortunate, but this situation arises almost every evening. How you react from here can become the benchmark for the coming weeks and potentially the fate of your home.

Before anything else can occur, it is vitally important to find the source of the problem and shut it off. Already humidity levels are rising at the same rate as your blood pressure, so make sure to turn on the AC unit to begin evaporation. Move contents to dry areas and unplug electrical devices that are in high impact areas.  Now is the time to take a deep breath and try to think beyond the anxiety. You will have to start making some phone calls that will be giving a complete stranger access to your home and this is no time to make a rash decision.

The best advice that I can offer in this situation is to go with people that you know on a personal level or that have been highly recommended in the past. Trust is the most important facet of this process. Keep in mind that this is your home and your money. We always recommend to not sign any paperwork without a written estimate or word from your insurance company for approval of coverage. However, as your insurance company will most likely tell you, it is crucial to begin remediation work as soon as possible so that no secondary damage will occur.

If you do take your plumbers recommendation for remediation company, keep in mind that many times these companies are offering kick backs for referrals and you may end up with a company in your home that is not qualified to do the work. Do your research on any referral that you receive. Make sure they are insured, licensed, and use quality, up-to date equipment.

At this point, it is important to get your insurance agent on the phone and have them begin looking over any potential coverage issues. You would rather know upfront whether or not you will be fronting the bill. As you wait for your emergency response team to arrive, begin taking pictures and noting any damage that you find on furniture.

As we tell all of our customers, the most exhausting portion of any loss is the first 24 hours. As the dust settles the details and extent of damage and reconstruction will reveal themselves. It is important to think slowly but move quickly during these chaotic periods. If you have any additional questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to call SERVPRO of Lakeland at 863-646-4213 and we would be happy to help you create an emergency readiness profile that could help prevent further damage to your home or business.

Preparing for Tropical Storms and Hurricanes Lakeland, FL

Storm Damage Preparing for Tropical Storms and Hurricanes Lakeland, FL Larry Riddle, Owner, SERVPRO of Lakeland

Water Damage, Mold, and Fire Caused by Storms
Preparing for a natural disaster is not something that we often think about here in Florida. After catastrophic hurricane seasons year after year, a hockey team called the Tampa Bay Lightning that reflects one of the most lightning struck areas on earth, and tornado warnings that flash across Bay News 9 every time it rains, it is no wonder why Florida residents stock up on beer instead of water during these tough times.

Unfortunately, when these disasters do strike, not everyone makes it out unscathed. Trailers get dismantled, lightning doesn’t just strike trees, and hurricanes don’t always ruffle a few bushes. Besides the usual stock up of food, batteries, and water, how can you protect your home and other assets?

Primary damage from larger storms is often caused by wind knocking down branches. It is vitally important that if you have any trees on your property, trim them by the end of May, especially if you have an older roof.

Roofs in Florida, especially Lakeland is susceptible to hard rains and high humidity levels. This often causes them to crack and leak well before roofs in other places. Shingles last for approximately 20 years, however, leaks can still occur in the sub layers. In order to keep water out of your house, make sure you check your roof every year, and keep your eyes to the ceiling for any discoloration.

Often times we see floods occurring from improper drainage of water, and leaky seals on windows. Proper home maintenance is important. Windows should be caulked every couple years. Any pooling of water all the sides of your home also represent a huge problem. When large storms drop immense amounts of rain, these puddles become much larger, and your foundation may not be able to keep the water out.

Prevention is often the best way to keep your house from becoming victim to storm damage. Most remediation, restoration, and construction companies would be more than happy to assist customers with detection of potential problem areas, so contact a local professional if you have any concerns about Tropical Storm Chantal or the upcoming hurricane season.

Mold Detection and Water Removal

6/27/2013 (Permalink)

Mold Remediation Mold Detection and Water Removal Mold comes in many different shapes and colors.

Detecting Mold in Your Home

The adverse effects of mold growth inside your home can be catastrophic. Homeowners who have mold problems have complaints ranging from basic sinus infections and headaches to upper respiratory issues. It can cause debilitating problems to the value of a home and one's health and remediation can be costly.

With that being said, it is no wonder that one of the most dreaded four letter words you can utter in any home is mold. Detecting mold, however, is not as daunting as many may think. It can sometimes be as easy as looking at you’re A/C vents, smelling the air when you return from the grocery store, or even spotting discoloration underneath cabinets or on walls.

In most cases, microbial growth is facilitated or activated by sources of constant moisture and high humidity levels. Leaky pipes and drains and faulty A/C ducts often produce a presence of moisture in your walls and ceilings that can create mold if not dried properly. This is the first and most important step in detecting and preventing a problem in your home.

Sometimes sources cannot be identified and could be caused by a crack in your foundation or bad seals on showers and windows. At this point, finding mold growth becomes somewhat invasive. If no surface mold is apparent, drywall or floors may need to be pulled back in order to detect the problem.

If a problem cannot be detected, it is always recommended that air samples be taken in order to properly identify the amount of spores and the type of microbial that is present in your home.

It goes without saying that all remediation and detection should be handled by a licensed professional, but identifying any of the issues above could keep a small problem from becoming a big problem.
